Jessore is one of the ancient locality in our country. From the historical information, about 25000 years ago Jessore was built by the alluvium of the river Ganga. . There are various types of people used to say about the name “Jessore”. From the book of Cunningham we found “Jossor” means bridge. By the rotation of time from “Jossor” turned into “Jessore”.

A section of influential people identified as Siddique Munshi and his gang group have continued grabbing and lifting sand, earth randomly from the Buri-VoirobRiver flowing between Kaliganj upazila under Jhenidah and Jessore district, intensifying the threat of erosion in the area, alleged local people Monir Khan of the villager of Hasilbagh village.

Around three hundred acres of cropland and over five hundred dwellings at Hasilbagh village and several establishments are under threat due to illegal pond digging in the river and unplanned sand and earth lifting from few months, alleged an 80 years old man.

During a recent visit, this correspondent saw 10/12 day labourers lifting sand and earth randomly and grabbing 12 bighas of land for making a pond in river after giving barricade in the river in Gahaj Ghat area under Hasilbagh village.

Huge amount of sand and earth, sufficient to load at least 30 to 35 tractors, is lifted daily for sending to different areas.  Sand loaded in a tractor is now selling for Tk 300 to Tk 350, alleged an elderly person of the area.

Sand lifter and river grabber Hazi Siddique Munshi of Hasilbagh village under Barobazaar union porishod in Kaliganj upazila said to the correspondent that they lift sand from the river and making a pond in 12 bigha for fish farming as their arable lands went into the river. But he didn’t give any prove documents for his comment then.

Villagers of the area said they lost their landed property due to the river erosion caused by the callous act in next rainy season.

Assisting land officer of Kastovanga union porishod Robindranath Kha said to The Independent that we have noticed him several times after getting allegation from the local people but he didn’t stop it. He is doing his illegal work as his own desire.

Several locals requesting anonymity said we have submitted written complaint to the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Kaliganj but no action is taken against the illegal sand and earth lifters and river grabber.

UNO Eradul Haque admitted receiving the complaint and said, “We will start drives to stop the illegal sand lifting within a short time.”

Karnafuli River  (also spelt Karnafuli) the largest and most important river in chittagong and the chittagong hill tracts,Karnaphuli is a 667 metres (2,188 ft) wide river in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. Originating from the Lushai hills in Mizoram, India, it flows 270 km (170 mi) southwest through Chittagong Hill Tracts and Chittagong and then follows a zigzag course before it forms two other prominent loops, the Dhuliachhari and the kaptai.

The Rangamati and the Dhuliachhari loops are now under the reservoir of the Kaptai earth-filled dam. The hydroelectric dam is situated just before the entrance of the river into the Kaptai loop. After coming out from the Kaptai loop the river follows another stretch of tortuous course through the Sitapahar hill range and flows across the plain of Chittagong after emerging from the hills near Chandraghona. Therefore, the river drains into the bay of bengal cutting across several hill ranges, viz the Barkal, Gobamura, Chilardak, Sitapahar and Patiya of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Chittagong.

It has possibly maintained its older course keeping pace with the uplift of the hill ranges and can be classified as an antecedent river. The Karnafuli is narrow and straight from Prankiang to waggachhari along Kaptai-Chandraghona road. The straightness of the river is probably due to a fault, which controlled the channel from Prankiang to Wagga. The main tributaries of the Karnafuli are the kasalong, Chengi, halda and Dhurung on the right and the Subalong, Kaptai, Rinkeong and Thega on the left.Flowing to the west through rangunia upazila and then keeping raozan upazila on the north and boalkhali upazila on the south, it receives the waters of the Halda river at Kalurghat just above the railway bridge. It then turns south, receives the waters of the Boalkhali and other khals and turns west circling round the eastern and southern sides of Chittagong Town. From the extreme corner of the chittagong port to the west, it moves southwest to fall into the Bay of Bengal 16.89 km below. It is navigable throughout the year by sea-going vessels up to Chittagong Port and by large boats, shallow draughts and all sorts of freighters and launches up to Kaptai river in the Hill Tracts.

A noticeably small river, having very shallow in depth, one can pass the river by walking easily, regardless the season. Though the river is very narrow and shallow, but the current of the river is very strong.If you simply drop a straw or any other crumb into the water, you can easily find how fast that stuffs are floating.

This river is not that much beautiful or eye pleasing due to the muddy water. Also the river used to carry lots of dry leafs from trees and grasses. But the main attraction is, how it is flowing through the mountains. If you observe the river from the top of any hill(specially "Alu Tila"), it will appear you as a giant snake from far side. So many turns and twists.
